Even though the arrival of Firefox and Chrome did a lot of damage to its reputation and popularity Internet Explorer has remained one of the most widely used web browser (simply because it is bundled with all versions of Windows). It was slow, ugly and was flooded with virus attacks. People were eagerly waiting for a better, safer option. That's when Firefox was launched. It became very popular immediately and by 2008, about 20% percent of all the users switched to Firefox. Most people who stuck with Internet Explorer were ignorant about it. Later Google Chrome came out adding fuel to fire. I've seen web browser comparison charts without Internet Explorer. And some included it in the charts just to show how good the others are.

But Microsoft will not give up easily. Now they've come up with a NEW Internet Explorer.

Initial thoughts

I downloaded and installed it a few days after its launch.

As I launched the beta for the first time, I was welcomed by the addons -performance advisor which identifies addons that may be slowing down the browser and gives you the information you need to disable or fix it, directly from the Notification Bar itself. I disabled all of them.

The new Internet Explorer is entirely different from the older versions which we are familiar with. The first thing you will notice is the absence of those old fashion menu bar and things like that on top of the window. The address bar and the search bar have now combined to form the 'One Box'. So you'll only see what's essential to your browsing experience. I think MS took a few leaves out of Chrome's book. The interface looks very good. The new IE responds a lot quicker than the previous ones and it also loads pages very quickly. Maybe not as quick as Chrome but still very fast. Tear Off Tabs is a feature in IE 9 that facilitates side by side comparison of two pages when needed. I found this very useful. Internet Explorer 9 has an integrated download manager and if you're on Windows 7, you can pin websites to the taskbar for easy access.

Security and Reliability
They've improved the Smart Screen Filter which is a security feature that protects the user from phishing and malware attacks. And most importantly IE 9 shows us warnings (when downloading) only based on the reputation of the files that we are about to download. It is a very useful feature because IE was very annoying in the past, asking for a 1000 permissions to download a file. It offers private browsing which Firefox introduced a century ago. But still I'm happy to see that. Another feature they seem to have adopted from Chrome is tab isolation. If a site crashes on one tab, the rest of the tabs will remain active. So, you keep browsing, undisturbed.

The browser wars of yesteryear between Microsoft and Netscape seem so quaint. (And look what happened to Netsacpe, too.) Today it is all about Adobe Flash versus the multi-touch swipe technology that is part of Apple's product lines.

Why is this a war? Apple's iPod, iTouch, and now iPad all share a lack of support for Adobe's Flash technology, the animation glue that binds Web pages to in-line video playback. When you bring up your Safari browser in these devices, you see a big blank nothing on the pages that have Flash content to play. And what that means to me is that Apple has made it clear: rewrite your sites to support our own technologies (including new apps that are certain to populate the iTunes Store soon), or be forever absent from this brave new world of cool devices that Steve is creating.

I come to the support of Flash most reluctantly, mind you. Flash is a necessarily evil, and for the most part we just don't even think of it when we merrily surf around the Internet, finding new video content to amuse and inform us. (Unless our plug-ins are outdated or messed up, that is.)

Flash will bring about the Internet TV revolution a lot sooner than the misinformed mainstream TV executives will like to admit, too: the more video that gets encoded in Flash, the fewer hours that 20-, 30-, and 40-somethings will spend in front of their living room TVs, if they even have living room TVs anymore. See what has happened to Leno et al. Their best bits are immediately uploaded to YouTube and watched the next morning. That is the power of Flash.

But Apple has its own idea about how to watch video, and it has nothing to do with standards that anyone else creates. It is about making Web content creators develop new iTunes Apps that can deliver their content customized for their devices. Anyone using an ordinary Web browser can be ignored. Granted, they have sold a lot of iPhones, so it isn't a market that has been marginalized like their share of the PC market - but still. Why do so many Web site owners want this? Just three days after Microsoft patched 11 bugs in Internet Explorer (IE), hackers are exploiting one of those vulnerabilities, a security company said Friday. Microsoft fixed the flaw Tuesday in an 11-patch update for IE. That update was part of a larger Patch Tuesday roll-out that quashed 34 bugs in 16 separate security bulletins.

Most security experts had put the IE update at the top of their priority lists, and urged Windows users to deploy it as soon as possible. Today, Symantec reported that CVE 2011-1255 -- its assigned ID in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures database -- is already being abused. "So far, we have only seen limited attacks taking advantage of this vulnerability and believe that the exploit is only being carried out in targeted attacks at present," said Joji Hamada, a senior researcher with Symantec's security response team, in a post to a company blog.

Hamada said that Symantec had found an exploit on an apparently-compromised site that automatically downloads an encrypted malicious file to the PC of any user browsing with an unpatched copy of IE8. The malware shows some bot traits, Hamada added. Once planted on a machine, it contacts a remote server and listens for commands from its hacker overlords. Although the CVE 2011-1255 vulnerability affects IE6 and IE7 as well as IE8, Symantec has only seen working exploits that target the latter. IE9, the browser that Microsoft launched in mid-March, is not affected by the vulnerability, although it was also patched Tuesday to address four different bugs.

In the accompanying advisory, Microsoft pegged the flaw as "critical," its most-serious threat level, for IE7 and IE8 on all Windows machines, and for IE6 running on Windows XP. For IE6 on Windows Server 2003 Microsoft rated the bug as "moderate." Microsoft also assigned a "1" to the vulnerability in its exploitability index, meaning the company expected a reliable exploit to appear within 30 days. The attackers beat that by a significant margin, putting their exploit into play within three days.

Microsoft was made aware of the flaw in late January by VeriSign's iDefense Labs, which had bought the bug from an anonymous researcher through its bounty program. iDefense's own advisory categorized the vulnerability as a "use-after-free" bug, a type of memory management flaw that can be exploited to inject attack code. Users unable to apply Tuesday's IE update can stymie the attacks Symantec has spotted by disabling JavaScript. To turn off JavaScript, users should select the "Tools" menu in IE, then click "Internet Options," the "Security" tab and the "Internet" content zone. Next, click "Custom Level" and in the "Settings" box, click "Disable" under "Active scripting." Click "OK" in the current dialog box.

Tabbed Browsing
